In the last few decades, Sufism, the mystical tradition of Islam that often passes under the radar of academic and public debate about contemporary Islam, has ‘gone global’. Sufi orders have attracted a rising following in urban areas of Euro-America, Africa and Asia. This conference is the first to trace the connections between the multiple sites of these global Sufi orders from a multi-sited perspective. Bringing together scholars from Europe, the US and Australia the conference asks how and by what means Sufi orders have achieved and maintain this global appeal.
The conference is organised by the research project SATS (www.sufism.au.dk) and will take place in Istanbul 20-23. October 2014.
